In the field of teaching there are many different ways for a teacher to teacher and no teacher has the exact same style. Every teacher has his or her own way they do thing and they have there on philosophies about how to teacher their students. No two teachers have a style that is similar. There are five classic educational philosophers Perennialism, Progressivisim, Essentialism, Existentialism, and Social Reconstruction. These are the five main teaching philosophies that every teacher uses to get their own teaching style. The Perennialism philosophy views truth as a constant, or perennial. The aim of education is to ensure that students acquire knowledge of these unchanging principles or great ideas. This view believes what worked fifty years ago will work today. Education must promote humankind’s continuing searching for truth. Whatever is true will always, and everywhere, be true; in short, truth is universal and timeless. This view also says that education should stimulate students to think thoughtfully about significant ideas. Teachers should use correct and critical thinking as their primary method, and they should require the same of their students. In a Perennialism classroom the teacher would be very emphasis the great works of literature, class is very repetitive, teacher believes they are they to just teach, and teacher’s classroom behavior is strict. These teachers use the so called Great Books of the Western World curriculum. Books such as Bewolf, books written by authors like Chaucer, Dickens, and Shakespeare. They believe that this approach makes students become independent and critical thinkers. The Essentialism philosophy has some similarities to Perennialism views and is also a conservative philosophy. In Essentialism there is a belief that our culture holds a core of common knowledge that schools are obligated to transmit to students, unlike Perennialism which believe in teaching just the truth Essentialism teaches a set of external truths that productive members of society need to know. In an Essentialism classroom it is very structured and repetitive, teacher uses old methods that are proven to work, teacher believes kids come to school to learn and doesn’t worry about student’s personal life, and teacher pushes students to get the most out of them. The Progressivism philosophy is the view that education should be child centered rather than focused on the teacher or content area. This philosophy says that knowledge that is true in the present may not be the true in the future. They also say the best way to prepare students for an unknown future is to equip them with problem solving strategies that will enable them to discover meaningful knowledge at various stages of their life. The content of the curriculum ought to be derived from the student’s interest rather than from academic disciplines. This view says effective teaching takes into account the whole child and his or her interests and needs in a relation to cognitive, affective, and psychomotor areas. It views learning as active rather than passive. In a Progressivism classroom the teacher would be saw as laid back go with the flow of things, the teachers gives the students the choice in the classroom as much as possible, the teacher has supportive relationships with the students, and also prepare students for the unknown future. This style views the teacher as a guide or resource person whose primary responsibility is to facilitate student learning. The teacher helps the student learn what is important to them rather than passing on a set of so called enduring truths. The Existentialism philosophy is unique because it focuses on the experiences of the individual. In Existentialism it offers the individual a way of thinking about my life, what has meaning for me, what is true for me. In general, it emphasizes creative...
