People are constantly communicating. Today more than ever people are communicating in all sorts of methods, ranging from email to text messaging. What most people fail to notice is that a lot of the communicating people do is non verbal and also non written. This form of Demonstrative Communication includes such things as facial expressions, tone of voice, proximity and body language. In certain scenarios Demonstrative Communication can have positive and negative, as well as effective and ineffective out comes for both the sender and the receiver. Proxemics is a nonverbal communication that refers to the distance one stands while talking to another person. (O'Connor, Rios, & Cheesebro, 2010) This variation of nonverbal communication can be used in a few different ways. One way is used when; the sender is trying to convey a more personal effect on the receiver in the conversation. Intimate or personal messages are usually conducted from eighteen inches to four feet away from each other. (O'Connor, Rios, & Cheesebro, 2010) This method of nonverbal communication would be effective if the sender’s message was of a personal nature, and the sender used the proximity of about a foot away from the receiver. The receiver would then realize that the message was in fact genuine and heart felt thus having a positive effect on their conversation. This method could also be ineffective if the sender tries to use the proximity method and engages the receiver in a close rage of conversation. The receiver may feel that sender is invading their personal space and become territorial. If the receiver becomes territorial about their space, they will be less engaged in the conversation and be more focused on the fact that their space is being breached. The receiver would then not be listening to the message the sender is trying to communicate having a negative outcome.
